About Us:

The Society was founded in April 2022 by organisers of earlier UK & Ireland 1-day meetings on occupational and environmental exposure science. The first of these was held in 2013 in Edinburgh and in 2025 this will be held at the UK Health Security Agency Conference Centre at the Harwell Innovation Campus in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

Aims:

The Society has the following core aims:

  • To promote occupational and environmental exposure science
  • To oversee the arrangements for an annual UK based meeting on occupational and environmental exposure science.
  • To facilitate the development of a professional network in the UK focussed on occupational and environmental exposure science.
  • To promote research collaborations in occupational and environmental exposure science within the UK as well as internationally.

What is Exposure Science?

As long ago as 400 BC Hippocrates reported how air, water, food, and living quality influenced disease.

Exposure Science involves establishing the types, levels, and combinations of exposures that people experience and once known works to reduce/counteract the exposures.

Questions that exposure scientists try to answer…

How do exposures affect human health and disease over a lifetime?

What are the spatial and temporal dimensions of exposure events?

How do we minimize exposure pathways?

Today exposure science is a multi-disciplinary field, involving researchers from many fields, such as environmental science, analytical chemistry, biology, geology, physics, atmospheric measurements, data science and mathematical modelling as well as occupational hygiene and medicine.
